Food Handler Certificate

In order to meet provincial regulations people employed in the food serving, storing and receiving industry are required to have a food safety or food handler certificate. Candidates can receive this certification either through a food safety course or a food handling course. The type of course, course content, cost and length is dependant on the province in which the candidate is required to have the certification. Variety of Different Certification:

Candidates in each Canadian province are required to have the following certifications.

  • Food Handler Certification – Required in Manitoba and Saskatchewan
  • FoodSafe Level 1 – Required in British Columbia and majority of Canadian Provinces.
  • FoodSafe Level 2 – Required in British Columbia and majority of Canadian Provinces.
  • Food Safety – Required in Ontario
  • AHS Food Safety – Required in Alberta

Food Handler Certificate:

Candidates that successfully complete the course will receive a food safety or food handler certificate immediately upon completion. Candidates are required to complete a multiple choice test of approximately 55 questions with a minimum of 70% to pass the course. Certificate meet provincial standards and regulations and does not expire. Some provinces may request candidates renew certification based on health inspector or regulations.

Length of Course:

The length of a food safety or food handler certification course varies from 8 to 10 to 16 hours depending on your location and the level of certification. Basic food handler and food safety certification courses only take 8 hours.

Cost of Course:

The cost of a food safety or food handler certification course varies depending on the level of certification and the province. Typically longer courses are more expensive costing about 125 dollars and the basic courses vary in price from 55 to 80 dollars.
